Understanding the Financial Impact of Pediatric Cancer on Families

By Poonam Tawde, Parker Project Team Volunteer

Have you ever considered the impact on a family’s situation when a child is diagnosed with cancer? The daunting medical expenses that keep you awake at night.

The costs associated with childhood cancer are overwhelming. From the diagnosis to the treatments families face an average expense of $43,516. The hospital stays, surgeries, chemotherapy. It all adds up rapidly.

The financial burden doesn’t end there. After the intensive treatment phase is completed, ongoing costs persist. Around $5,517 annually. Follow up care, doctors’ appointments, medications to prevent cancer recurrence. These expenses continue to accumulate and in the worst-case scenario.

During those months filled with hospital visits as you watch your child slip away. Bills can soar above $100,000. Such exorbitant costs have the potential to devastate you financially in addition to the grief you experience. It’s more than money at stake.

Picture yourself driving through the night to take your child to a medical professional and then attempting to function at work without any rest. The expenses from trips for treatment quickly add up. Gas money, hotel stays, dining on the go.

Then perhaps the challenging aspect, lost wages due to time off work. Cancer shows no mercy, towards your employment circumstances.

It’s tough when one parent or maybe both has to take time off work or even quit their job. The loss of income really hits hard when you’re already struggling.

We need to step up and improve our support systems. The statistics are heartbreaking. They don’t show the picture. The fear of losing your home, your car. All while trying to stay strong, for a child. On top of that the emotional toll it takes.

We have to find ways to help ease this burden. Financial guidance, grants and support groups should not be an afterthought.

Want to learn more? Cancer Trends Progress Report sheds light on the financial struggles families face with childhood cancer.

At present we may not be able to cure cancer but we can reduce the strain on these courageous families.
